Universal Life Insurance in Santa Clara
This is permanent coverage you can adjust, with a premium and death benefit that can shift as your income and family change. We set each policy up with care, from the funding level to the benefit option, so it keeps doing its job for decades.
Permanent coverage that bends without breaking
Universal life is permanent life insurance built around a cash value account and a premium you can adjust. Every month the insurer takes out the cost of insurance and its policy charges, then credits interest on the balance left over. You can put in extra during strong years and scale back during tighter ones, provided the balance stays large enough to cover those monthly deductions.
That flexibility is the appeal and the risk. A policy funded at the bare minimum can look fine for years, then lapse in your seventies when insurance costs climb. Most of what decides a policy's lifespan is set in the first meeting: the premium you plan to pay, the interest assumption behind the illustration, and whether a no-lapse rider belongs in the design.
We take those small choices seriously. Sometimes the honest answer is that term life or whole life suits you better, and when that happens we explain the reasoning plainly and point you there.
What goes into a well-built policy
- A funding level with margin
- We illustrate your premium at conservative interest rates, not just the current crediting rate. If the policy only works at today's rate, it is underfunded, and we adjust before you sign.
- The right death benefit option
- Option A keeps a level benefit and builds cash value faster. Option B adds the cash value to the benefit but costs more as you age. We explain which suits your goals and what each does to the long-term cost.
- Rider choices that earn their place
- A no-lapse guarantee rider, waiver of premium or accelerated benefit rider can be worth it, or can be dead weight. We walk through each one and leave out what you do not need.
- Beneficiaries named with precision
- Each person you choose is listed by full name and share, with a backup in line behind them. Clear designations keep the money moving to the right people without avoidable delays.
- Annual policy reviews
- Once a year we look at your statement together: cash value, charges and the projected lapse age. Small corrections early cost far less than large ones later.
When universal life is worth a closer look
You want coverage past age 80
Term coverage usually ends before then. Universal life can be designed to stay in force for life.
Your income moves around
Business owners and commission earners often prefer premiums they can raise or lower from year to year.
You have an older policy you have not reviewed
Universal life policies sold when interest rates were higher are often underfunded now. An in-force illustration shows whether yours is on track to lapse.
You need a benefit for a specific purpose
Funding a buy-sell agreement, leaving an inheritance or covering estate costs are common reasons to want permanent coverage at a lower premium than whole life.
Whole life premiums feel too rigid
If you want lifelong protection but not a fixed premium schedule, universal life sits in between.
What shapes the cost of universal life
Universal life premiums are set by you within limits, so the real question is what it costs to keep the policy healthy. These are the details that move that number. We walk you through a clear comparison before you decide.
Age and health at application
Insurers price the cost of insurance by age, health rating and tobacco use. Starting younger and healthier lowers the monthly charges for the life of the policy.
Face amount and benefit option
A larger death benefit costs more, and Option B costs more than Option A over time because the insurer's risk does not shrink as cash value grows.
How long you want it to last
Funding to age 90 costs less than funding to 121. We show you the difference so the choice is deliberate.
Riders and guarantees
A no-lapse guarantee adds cost but removes much of the interest rate risk. Other riders add smaller charges.
How we build your policy
- 1
A first conversation by phone
We ask about your family, your business, your budget and what the coverage needs to do. No forms to fill out before we talk.
- 2
Illustrations side by side
We run policies from several insurers at more than one interest assumption. You see how each holds up if rates stay low, not only the best case.
- 3
Application and underwriting
We guide you through the application and any medical exam, and keep you updated while the insurer reviews it. Underwriting often takes several weeks.
- 4
Delivery and a final check
When the policy arrives we go through it page by page, confirm the beneficiaries and premium schedule, and note the date of your first annual review.

Common questions about universal life
What sets universal life apart from whole life?
Whole life fixes the premium, and the insurer guarantees how its cash value grows. Universal life lets you pay more or less, and in some cases change the death benefit. Its cash value moves up or down with credited interest and the charges taken out. You gain flexibility, but the policy needs more watching.
What if my universal life policy runs short of funds?
The policy lapses, meaning coverage stops. That happens when the account can no longer pay the monthly charges and no added premium makes up the difference. It is the most frequent problem we find with this type of policy. Funding with a cushion, a no-lapse rider when it suits you, and reviewing the statement every year keep coverage in place.
Is it possible to take a loan from the cash value?
Most policies permit loans or withdrawals. A loan builds interest and lowers the death benefit unless repaid, and big withdrawals can cut short how long the policy lasts. We show you the impact before any money comes out.
Will you review a universal life policy I bought years ago?
Yes. We can ask your insurer for an in-force illustration and tell you straight whether the policy is on course, needs more money or should be replaced. Sometimes leaving it alone is the right call.
Should I use universal life to save for retirement?
It can help, but its first job is insurance. If building savings is the main aim, start with our retirement income planning conversation instead.
